Landscaping Ideas For Small Backyards - Don't Throw Out Your Old Shoes!

I did a post on my Facebook page the other day about using old gumboots as a "pair of pots". People thought I was nuts because I didn't post a picture.

They say a picture paints a thousand words. Here's your proof!

The old gumboots are simply nailed to an upright structure such as a wooden fence or wall for best visual effects and your old running shoes have found a whole new purpose!
By choosing the right types of plants for the containers as well as the right type for the surrounding plants you can get a very interesting piece of landscaping!

Small Backyard Landscaping Ideas - Walls And Fences

Just by changing the color of a portion of your garden walls can have a dramatic effect on the visual appeal of your flowerbeds. You need to experiment with the right colors but here is an example:

A pale purple wall serving as a backdrop for a bed that contains lilac, pink and white flowers really  accentuates the colors of the flowers. With some wild long grass species inbetween it looks stunning. If you feel like going for this color shade, use pink roses, lilac scabiosa and Verbena bonariensis.

Another small backyard landscaping idea is to create a screenwall made out of wood logs and branches simply stacked on top of one another. It gives very nice texture in the chosen area of your backyard.

If you have an existing garden wall, you may want to consider giving it the look of a "flowerbox in the air". You can create this look easily by utilising creepers and guiding them fro one side to the top of the wall from where they can grow horizontally and create the look of a flowerbox on top of the wall. You can use Dichondra argentea "silver falls" as a creeper.

Here is a unique idea to close off on today's landscaping ideas for walls:

"Hang an edible garden against the wall"

Its not that difficult! Plant some edible lettuce types of various colors in a wire basket and encase it in a wooden frame and hang it against the wall! Remember to water it daily and keep it out of the afternoon sun.

Small backyard landscaping ideas - Rock Stairway

Unshaped natural rock sheets can be used as a natural stairway to an elevated bushy area. You can create your own unique bushy area by planting a combination of Bamboo or other cane types with long wild grass species. (Picture to follow)

Small Backyard Landscaping Ideas - Wooden Decks And Wild Grass

Consider building a simple wooden deck in stead of conventional paving. The wood gives an immediate  earthy atmosphere.

This is also a good idea for walkways.

If you don't feel like maintaining the wood, you can always use a deck made out of recycled plastic planks which will have almost the same visual effect. For beds immediately adjacent to the wooden deck, consider using a combination of different long grass species, poppies and lilies.

This will create a very peaceful wild grass area in your garden and it is sure to attract a lot of bird species.
