It is important when doing your landscape design, to give thought to allow for layering of your flower beds.  By layering the garden beds a new dimension is added to the overall layout of your garden.

Layering your garden beds is quite simple and effectively it just means the arrangement of your plants in descending heights from the back to the front.

You don't want to have the taller plants in front of the shorter ones, so it's best to start off by making a rough sketch of where and how you want the plants laid out and spaced.

Then you need to identify what types of flowers/plants you will be using and also identify to what lengths (or heights) these flowers will eventually grow. You can discuss this with your local gardening store, but in most cases there will be signage, photos or tags on the plants that will help you with this.

When layering, and depending on the width of you flower beds, you should have at least three layers. Obviously, the wider the beds, the more layers you'll have.

For obvious reasons, layering should only be used along the perimeters of your yard. Give thought to what height you would like to start off with in the back row. For example, you may want to use cornivers which can grow quite high and improve privacy.

From there, work your way through the various layers until you reach the edge of the flower bed with the lowest plants such as certain types of grasses.

It is a natural progression of most landscape design to use the process of layering, so have fun in selecting and planting the flowers and plants.
